How effective is LED light therapy? Based on scientific research
When it comes to aging, an important factor leading to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles is insufficient collagen production.
Increasing the number of fibroblasts is just one of the benefits of red and near-infrared LED therapy. Fibroblasts produce collagen fibers, so the more fibroblasts in the skin, the more collagen is produced.
Here are some studies that confirm the effectiveness of LED therapy in the treatment of age-related changes in the skin.
A study realized by Shaoul and Mulholland [1] evaluated the effect of Silk’n Reju/FaceFX device (Home Skinovations, Yokneam, Israel) on 40 participants, between 30 to 55 years old, with lax facial skin, large pores, fine lines, and wrinkles. They received eight treatments every two weeks for four weeks. As a result, were noted improvements in facial wrinkles and skin texture. However, a decrease in pigmentation was less noticeable. The authors concluded an overall improvement in the appearance of the facial skin in 77% of the patients.
The paper of Barolet and collaborators [2] examined the effects of LED therapy, using 660 nm wavelength, on 40 aged/photo-aged individuals between 33 to 62 years old (37 women and three men). Individuals were treated three times per week for four consecutive weeks. The research found that LED therapy promoted collagen production by increasing blood circulation, improving oxygenation and nutrient delivery to cells. As a result, more than 90% of patients experienced a decrease in the depth of wrinkles and skin roughness. Also, patients did not present adverse effects or downtime.
Many studies support the effectiveness of red and infrared light on the appearance of the skin. In the specific case of Omnilux devices, Russell and peers [3] examined 31 individuals, between 35 to 57 years old, with age-related wrinkles. The authorstreated them with the OmniluxTM LED system for 12 weeks. The treatments combined wavelengths of 633 nm (Omnilux ReviveTM) and 830 nm (Omnilux PlusTM). After nine weeks, 52% of patients showed between 25 to 50% improvement in photoaging face skin by nine weeks; 81% of patients reported a significant reduction in wrinkles at the end of follow-up.
The research of Báez and Reilly [4] included 13 patients between 35 and 55 years old (ten women and three men) with wrinkles or fine lines. The patients received nine-light treatments lasting 20 minutes using LED therapy from two different sources: Omnilux ReviveTM (633 nm) and Omnilux PlusTM (830 nm). As a result, after 12 weeks of follow-up, 91% of patients reported an improvement in skin tone, and 82% reported an enhancement in skin smoothness in the treated area.
